Meditation and Writing

February 5, 2015

Deep in the basement of New College, University of Toronto, we chanted, Om Gam Ganapatayay Namaha 108 times. After a final deep breath in, we exhaled slowly and opened our eyes.

Meditation and Writing is a course offered to writers of all levels who want to find new approaches to creativity through meditation. The instructor, Mary Paterson, is the author of The Monks and Me: How 40 Days in Thich Nhat Hanh’s French Monastery Guided Me Home. Lord Ganesh 003

At the first class on Wednesday, we talked about our current projects and writing goals. Mary led us through several short meditations and writing exercises designed to deepen our understanding of what we wish to write about. Chanting the Ganesh mantra 108 times is supposed to invoke Ganesh, Remover of Obstacles and the Lord of Beginnings.

Of course, meditation, like writing, is a practice….
