Writing, Google and Bugs Bunny

March 5, 2013

I use Google daily to check facts for the stories I write.  It’s not bad.

Here’s an example of a question that came up this week at a writing morning: “What does it mean when someone buffs her nails on her shoulder?”

I entered that question into the Google search box.

By golly, Google spit up a site that included explanations for the gesture.  It wasn’t an authoritative site, but it wasn’t bad.

When you have a very particular question, don’t hesitate to frame it as a question, using very specific terms–the more specific you can be, the narrower the results.  You will be surprised how effective this is.

Of course, Google cannot answer all questions.  Sometimes you will need to visit the library or email an expert.

By the way, Bugs Bunny may have been the first to use that gesture.

Bugs may have been the first, but when I searched Google Images he seems to prefer carrots to buffing his nails 🙂
